What Is Absolute Location, and Can You Find Yours

Absolute location refers to a specific, fixed point on the Earths surface as expressed by a scientific coordinate system. It is more precise than the relative location, which describes where a place is located using other places nearby. A relative location can be as general as west of the highway or as specific as 100 North First Street. Absolute location is typically described using the longitude and latitude system. Geographically speaking, latitude represents points on the Earths surface from north to south, ranging from 0 degrees at the equator to (/-)90 degrees at the North and South Poles. Meanwhile, longitude represents points on the Earths surface from east  to west, ranging from 0 to 360 degrees. Absolute location is important for geolocation services, such as Google Maps and Uber. App developers have even called for an added dimension to absolute location, giving height to help specify between different floors of buildings at the same longitude and latitude. Brief Literary Analysis Edgar Allen Poe Free Essays

15 November 2012 Edgar Allan Poe Literary Analysis Edgar Allan Poe is often regarded as the most skilled American poet and short story writer, and it is no wonder because every literary work created by Poe is written with such proficiency, that even readers today are awe-struck. In Poe’s short stories and poems, one will find the same few themes in his works, such as women, the color red and a variety of horror themes, however one theme that is very repetitive is his employment of death. This theme is used in many novels today, and is also a popular theme in books, television shows and videogames. Death was one of Poe’s favorite themes, and is a big reason why Poe’s literary works are still read today. In Poe’s short story â€Å"The Masque of the Red Death†, the theme of death often brought up, such as when the fatal â€Å"red death† sickness was described: when contracted, its host would feel â€Å"sharp pains, and sudden dizziness† (1), and its host would have â€Å"profuse bleeding of the pores† (1). The red death was a widespread disease, but Prince Prospero’s castle was safe from the red death because the disease couldn’t get past the abbey gates. In his happy mood, the Prince organized a ball, this ball was not an ordinary ball, but it was a masquerade, in which the guests would wear masks and costumes. This story ends in an extremely violent manner, in which every masquerader succumbs to the red death. The theme of this masquerade was gruesome; many masqueraders wore very graphic outfits, which foreshadow the horrible end of this story. Another one of Poe’s works, â€Å"Annabel Lee†, was actually based on his wife, Virgiania Eliza Clemm Poe, and in the the poem, Annabel is killed by the angels above that were jealous of the love between Annabel and Poe. So one night, at the peak of their jealousy, the sent out a cloud â€Å"Chilling and killing† (4. 6) Poe’s Annabel Lee. The theme of death is very obvious in that Annabel Lee dies in the poem, and the main character is filled with an infinite sadness, that he even sleeps by the grave. What’s ironic about this poem is the fact that Annabel dies from a chilly wind, and Virginia, in her last stage of consumption, dies cold, and Poe, so poor, was unable to afford a blanket for her, a simple luxury that would have brightened her mood just a bit. The Fall of the House of Usher† is a unique short story in that it was one of the first â€Å"haunted house† stories of it’s time. This story was about a man who was invited by his friend, Roderick Usher, to cheer Usher up. The main character soon arrives at the Usher manor, which once was beautiful, now is an old run-down mansion. The only two Usher family members that are still alive are the twins, Roderi ck and Madeline, and both of them suffer from peculiar diseases, Roderick suffers from a â€Å"morbid acuteness of the senses† (3) and Madeline seemingly suffers form a type of immunodeficiency, in which she gets deathly ill often. The first appearance of the theme of death is when Roderick states Madeline as â€Å"dead† and subsequently buries Madeline prematurely. Roderick is aware of this, and near the end of the story, Madeline breaks out of her coffin and â€Å"with a low moaning cry, fell heavily inward upon the person of her brother,† (10) killing Roderick, another appearance of death. At the very end, the manor disappears, symbolizing the death of the Usher bloodline. The theme of death is apparent in this short story, so this theme is not only a coincidence. Many of Poe’s stories include death, and â€Å"The Black Cat† is no exception. This story is one of his more brutal stories in that the main character first hung his favorite cat, Pluto, and then â€Å"buried the axe† (4) in his wife’s head. The final death is that of the main character, when he is sentenced to hang for his atrocious deed of murder. This theme of death is proved as a common theme now, as it is in at least four of Poe’s literary works, and these stories aren’t the only ones that include the theme of death. Death is not a happy event. A funeral is usually a time of sadness, and there is depressing atmosphere that is fueled by this sadness. Poe recreates this atmosphere in many of his works in the mood of the story or poem. For example, in â€Å"The Fall of the House of Usher† this depressing mood is heightened when the reader becomes aware that the only remaining Ushers alive are Roderick and Madeline. Another instance of heightened mood is in â€Å"The Black Cat† when Pluto is brutally executed by the main character. This mood is even evident in â€Å"Annabel Lee† when Poe writes â€Å"A wind came out of the cloud by night, Chilling and killing my beautiful Annabel Lee† (4. 25-26). Poe is a master at creating this theme, as he effectively depresses the reader with the depressing mood of death. Poe is also proficient at symbolizing death. The symbolism of death takes many different forms in Poe’s works ranging from very simple symbols to rather complex ones. An example is the clock in â€Å"The Masque of the Red Death† in which the clock chimed every hour with a â€Å"dull, heavy, monotonous clang† (2). A clock is a symbol of death because it constantly reminds the limited life span of a human being. A rather blunt symbol of death is a coffin, like the one Madeline Usher broke out of in â€Å"The Fall of the House of Usher. † The reason a coffin is a symbol of death is because a corpse is put in a coffin prior to the burial of the body. The color black is also a symbol of death, which is the color of the velvet tapestries, hung in the seventh room in â€Å"The Masque of the Red Death† which is the room Prince Prospero and his fellow masqueraders are killed. In many of Poe’s works, the story takes place in an old house, or castle, the reason behind this is that an older house usually means it has survived several generations, which can also be related to death, because a generation is defined as a group of people born at approximately the same time, and since a human being has a defined life span, the end of a generation is when the group of people die. The old Usher manor has survived several generations of the Usher family, and it is also the place where several of the Usher family members are buried. At the end, it is the resting place of Madeline and Roderick. Ultimately, the house mysteriously disappears when Madeline and Roderick die. Another old building is Prince Prospero’s castle in â€Å"The Masque of the Red Death†, and that also has seen many generations of mankind, but it also sees the death of Prospero and his friends when the Red Death sneaks into the masquerade and swiftly kills them all. A very large amount of Poe’s works take place at night, rarely does one of Poe’s works take place in the daytime. The night has always held superstition for mankind because it is first of all, a time when humans sleep, and aren’t very active, and second of all, the human eye cannot see in the dark well. As stated before, rarely does one of Poe’s works take place in the day, in fact, the four works referenced all take place at night. One may wonder why many of Poe’s works were violent, gloomy, and why many of his stories included a lot of death. The explanation is because Poe had a very depressing life. His father was an alcoholic that left after Poe was a year old and eventually died of alcoholism. His mother cared for Poe until she died of consumption. After Poe’s mom had died, Francis Allan adopted Poe and Francis sent him to a peculiar school in England. What made this school peculiar was how the taught math and physical education. Math was taught using dates on tombstones, while physical education was taught by digging graves. This school could be a possible influence on Poe’s works, because he got to do graveyard work. Later, when he grew older, Poe had taken a romantic interest in his friend’s (his friend’s name was Richard) mother. Sadly, Richard’s mother developed a tumor, and died. Soon after Poe had finished college, Francis Allan died of consumption, and she was the only reason John Allan hadn’t evicted Poe yet, so once Francis died, Poe was evicted. After this event, Poe found a new romantic interest, in his adopted sister, Virginia Eliza Clemm Poe. Poe married her when he was twenty-six years old. Unfortunately, Virginia also died from consumption. Now it can be seen why Poe wrote so much about death, because he was surrounded by it. Poe’s life was a short-lived and very unfortunate one. Many of his loved ones died from either consumption or other causes, and Poe was always poor. Poe became an alcoholic, just like his father, and he died at age forty. There was no rest for Poe, so most of his feelings went into his poetry and short stories, and that was what made him a successful writer. In the time Poe lived, there was common a terrible disease called consumption, or more commonly known today as Tuberculosis. This disease would attack the victim’s lungs, and slowly kill the victim. The common symptom of consumption is coughing up blood, but there are other symptoms such as a fever, chest pains, a cough with increasing mucus and a nightly sweat. This disease is could have been a big influence on Poe’s writing, because this disease killed many of Poe’s beloved and in a rather violent manner. Another thing people of Poe’s time were scared of was being buried alive, so much that devices that rung bells were attached to coffins so in the event someone was buried alive, person in the coffin could ring the bell and be rescued from their earthly prison. This fear was so great, that Poe had the idea to put it into one of his stories â€Å"The Fall of the House of Usher† in which Madeline Usher was buried before she was dead, by Roderick Usher. This fear had an apparent influence on Poe’s literature, and people loved the thrill of reading Poe’s â€Å"tales of terror. † In â€Å"The Masque of the Red Death† Poe accomplishes several points, that death is unavoidable; Prince Prospero could not escape the inevitable Red Death disease by simply hiding in his Abbey until it went away. Poe also states that death is an eternal law. If there is a beginning, there is an end, and life is no exception. Even time dies alongside the masqueraders, for time, one of humanity’s fears, will cease to exist as well. These points are surprisingly true, for each thing that has a beginning comes to an end, no exceptions. Poe blends morals and lessons into a brutal story of a man who tried to evade death, but he was foolish, for no mortal can escape death. Science states that everything was created, and everything will be destroyed, in due time, so this eternal law of death that Poe creates is so incredibly accurate to science, that Poe was a genius to secretly incorporate this law into a short story. Edgar Allan Poe is perhaps one of the greatest American writers of all time. His short stories and poems are still read by the world, and for good reason, what makes his stories so good are his well-written story plots, and his themes of death, blood and gore which still ones that even people today can enjoy and be thrilled by. There is chipping on the surface of Memis man right arm. A portion of Sabus woman nose and her lips appear to be chipped off as well. On the lower part of Sabus body there is chipping on both legs and right underneath her pelvic area. There are visible horizontal lines that cut right across Memis right forearm and underneath Sabus breasts. These lines may indicate what pieces of the statue had to be mended back together. There is also chipping on the bottom right hand corner of the stone slab underneath Memis right leg. On Memis left shoulder there is a small remnant of rust color paint that was probably the skin color used for his whole body. This pair statue subtly deviates from the conventional representations of husband and wife in Old Kingdom artwork. This statue is rather exceptional because we see an image where the wifes symbolic gesture that signifies their marital status is affectionately returned by her husbands embrace. There is a sense of intimacy and warmth in this embrace. This may explain the fact that Memi stands with his feet together as opposed to the masculine striding pose where the left leg is slightly advanced. Memi retains the strict canonical pose with respect to the rigid frontal well-built body. His right arm hangs straight down and close to his side while his right hand is clenched in a fist with the thumb facing forward. He appears to be clenching some type of cylinder rod, which can also be interpreted as a symbol of royalty or power. His chest muscles, abdominal muscles and right bicep emphasize his well-toned body. His left arm wraps around the back of Sabus head and drapes down over her left shoulder. His left hand rests on her left breast. His fingers are stiff and elongated. Knuckles are visible and his left thumb is seen in profile. Memi stands much larger than Sabu and is almost a full head taller than she is. Their bodies are not aligned together; Memi is slightly more advanced and protrudes a bit more from the stone slab than Sabu. His back is not fully attached to the slab although his legs and feet appear to be semi-attached. Memis face is round in shape and is his gaze is focused straight ahead. His jaw line is not clearly defined. The texture of his hair appears to be very thick and in layers. This possibly could be interpreted for wavy or even curly hair. His hair partially covers his forehead and fully covers his ears almost touching his shoulders. His neck is very tiny and otherwise not proportioned to the rest of his body. His eyes are oval shaped and his nose is round and wide. He has full lips and his chin is well defined. Memi wears a garment wrapped around his waist, which covers the lower portion of his body to his knees. He is also wearing some type of belt that fastens underneath his navel and imitates a fan-pleated pattern, which covers the right side of his garment. We can never be too careful when trying to make a great impression. Maintaining a professional image could be difficult to some, as they like to express themselves with the images they want. The reality is that hiring managers are within their rights to not hire someone with a visible tattoo or facial piercings that believe could be offensive or appropriate in their workplace or with the customers. In fact, it's very common for employers to have a dress code policy that require employees to remove pierci ngs when working or cover tattoos with clothing or makeup as long as it is addressed in the employee handbook. If the business does not mention this policy, it is illegal for them to discriminate agai nst the employee. There is protected employment laws . The two type of religion is Japan is Shinto and Buddhism. Shinto is and ancient native religion of Japan. Japanese people still practice in a form of modified by the influence of Buddhism and Confucianism. The term Shinto, is a term that is created to distinguish the indigenous relation from Buddhism, the same as the Japanese kami-no-michi, â€Å"the way of the gods† or â€Å"the way of those above.† Kami means â€Å"above† or â€Å"superior,† this is the name used to designate a great host of supernatural beings or deities. Buddhism is a religion and philosophy founded in India in c.525 B.C. by Siddhartha Gautama, also known as Buddha. There are 300 million Buddhists world wide. This is one of the world great religions; it is divided into two main schools: the Theravada or Hinyana in Sri Lanka and South-East Asia, and the Mahayana in China, Mongolia, Korea, and Japan. The third school, is the Vajrayana, has a long tradition in Tibet and Japan. Buddhism ha s largely disappeared from its country of origin, India, except the many refugees from the Tibet region of China and small number converts from the lower castes of Hinduism. But there are a small amount of people who are Christians. The Japanese language is known around the United States, but would it be a useful tool if we (United States citizens) know it? Yes, it would a great tool for us to know this language. Japan we do lots of business with, and in order for us to do business we need to know how to communicate to them. If you are to travel there how are you suppose to tell them how you want your food? This language is mostly usage for business; we do lots of trading with Japan. Knowing Japanese is a great tool for us to know. Japan’s current attitude towards the United States is that they like the United States. When President Bush came in as president, he talked to Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori and the new president and between Foreign Minister Yohei Kono and Secretary of State Colin Powell; in the view of Japan alliance should it strengthen with the United States. Minister Kono later came and visited the United States to talk with Colin Powell. They built up a good personal relationship, talking about views on bilateral relations, and foreign situations, and effort in regard to global issues. On February 10, Japan’s time, a U.S. nuclear powered submarine collided into a fisheries training vessel. Japan was angered at the U.S. for that mistake and U.S. apologized. From that day on they are trying to strengthen there trading, ideas, and relations. Japan with their knowledge in technology, and resources, they are very important to the U.S. Japan technology is very futuristic; with the U.S. knowledge and Japan we would be able to make some crazy technologies. Japan they like everything neat and clean, like there technology. Japan recourses are: fishes, rice, sugar beets, vegetable, fruits, pork, poultry, dairy products, eggs. Japan is the world’s largest and technologically advanced producers of mother vehicles, electronics equipment, machine tools, steel and nonferrous metals, ships, chemicals, textiles, processed foods. This would be a great help with the trading business with Japan. Japan is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary government. Japan government is based on a constitutional of 1947. It was drafted by the Allied occupation authorities, and it was approved by the Japanese diet. The emperor is the â€Å"symbol of the state† but sovereignty rest with the people. Hirohito was the emperor from 1926 till he died in 1989; he was then succeeded by his son, Akihito. The diet has sole legislative power. It is composed of the House of Representatives, with 500 members elected for a four year term, with 300 representatives chosen by single-seat constituencies and the rest proportionally; and the house of councilors, with 252 members with a six year term. With 18 members with executive power and headed by the prim minister, who is elected by the diet and is usually the leader of the majority part of that body. Japan is divided into 47 prefectures; each of them is governed by a popularly elected governor and unicameral legislature. The cities, towns , and villages, elect there own mayors and assemblies. Education is a big deal in the Japanese culture. The Japanese parents are very strict about getting good grades. The parents are always pressuring you to do well, so you would be able to have a high paying job. School usually starts in the morning till night (8am-6pm). The students would always have to take off their shoes and a sign of respect of the building. The teachers are strict to the students, for that they are trying to help the student to grown up strong, and be disciplined. Japanese student don’t really have time to watch T.V. They are mostly studying; they probably spend 6 hours a week watching T.V. After school they would attend there after school activities like sports, or maybe an even a study group. Going to school is a very big deal for the Japanese. On December 7, 1941 Japan had attack Pearl Harbor. A report indicated that 2400 people we killed and 1300 we wounded. For that reason the U.S. had entered World War II. The reason why Japanese attack Pearl Harbor was that the U.S. Navy ships were positioned at. They were trying to paralyze from helping in the war. All they did was anger the U.S. The U.S. has a reason to join the war now. On August 6, 1945 the atomic bomb was dropped on the City of Hiroshima. The Enola Gay was the plane Colonel Tibbetts used to do this mission. After the dropping the bomb the U.S. had this war in its hand. The kinds of job positions they have at Japan is similar to here in the U.S. There are lots of fisher men in Japan, since they have lots of fish resources. Since there is lots of sushi bars there are chief who are needed. There is fast food over there so they would need workers to get the customers there food. There are lots of white collar jobs. There are all kinds of business in Japan, for Car Company, T.V. Company, etc. There is lots of opportunity in Japan for jobs, as long as you have the requirements you are hired. Japan unemployment rate is 4.9%, compared to U.S 5% (2002). Japan has lots of things to do during the day and night. During the day there are parks and amusement parks you can go to. There are lots malls and stores you can go to. There are Japanese gardens you can go check out, and looking the beautiful scenery. There is a Disney land at Japan that you can take your family and have some fun. The teens they would go out and hang out at arcades. At night is mostly for the older people. You can go to bars, clubs, strip clubs, etc. There are lots of people out at night walking around, checking out the scenes. There is lot of things to do, so you will always have plans if you do go out at night. Japanese people mostly like to each sushi. Rice is what they eat with everything. Eating fish cook or raw they like to eat fish. They also have traditional dishes. Noodles with what ever you want in there. Oyakodon is one of their popular dishes, it comes with salmon eggs, chicken, and eggs. Tempura is another good dish; deep fried battered fish, shrimps, or vegetables. They also have fast food, the popular one is McDonalds. But out of all of this they mostly like to eat fish. Japan area are mostly temperate and with for season, other then Hokkaido area and the subtropical Okinawa region. The winters are cool and sunny in the south, it is cold and sunny around Tokyo it sometime snow. It is very cold around Hokkaido; it is covered in snow for up to four months a year. Between June and September, it ranges from warm to very hot. In spring and autumn it’s generally mild throughout the country. Rain falls throughout the year but June and early July is the main rainy season. Hokkaido is much drier than the Tokyo area. Typhoons are likely to occur in September or October but rarely last more than a day. Japan is a great country that I would love to live there someday. The Agency services include residential services and support job placement and support, planned relief for the caregivers of children and adults with disabilities, social activities, and vocational training. Note this is a sample plan and is not intended to refer to any particular organization. 15 Summary of Most Important Points in the Environment An environmental scan, called the e-scan for short, is a process for discovering and documenting facts and trends in the operating environment of an organization that are likely to affect the organization in its future work. E-scan findings are used to orient strategic planning participants on the context in which the organizations mission is carried out. The e-scan can also include a summary of internal information about the organization and its history including who has been served, results it has achieved, its current structure, and financial data. It is often put in the framework of a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis Threats are external activities or trends that threaten the current and future success of the organization. Strengths The Agencys key strengths include the organizations demonstrated ability to provide high quality, necessary services, which help people with disabilities live a fuller life in the community. Staffs are committed, and the services and programs offered are monitored for quality. When there is a challenge, the organization meets it through innovation. The Agency has an excellent reputation and is looked to by other service providers as a leader. Weaknesses Some believe that The Agencys significant growth has led to challenges to human resources, difficulty with supervision, lack of structure for coordination among departments, and inconsistent administrative and clerical support. There is a perceived need for improved management practices, use of technology, and increased use of volunteers. Issues with the employment program were mentioned, including tracking, matching people to jobs, training, and finding more opportunities. Opportunities The opportunities considered most important included: Increasing community acceptance and opportunity for further inclusion through employment. There appears to be increased emphasis on inclusion at schools and increased openness by employers to hire people with disabilities. These changes make The Agencys philosophy more prevalent and may increase demand for its services and opportunities for employment and inclusion. Government Agency Waiver. Government will now provide the person with disabilities with a check to buy services. . Threats The threats considered most important included: Dependence on government funding. Funding, particularly the residential funding stream, doesnt keep up with needs. Implications: The Agency needs to assess the real demand for its services, increase private pay options, and be prepared to explore other opportunities for generating revenue. The question of what happens when private money is gone needs to be addressed. Other threats mentioned included: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ The aging population, which means aging caregivers and aging people with disabilities. The improvements in medicine mean people are living longer. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ There are a lot of nonprofits in the county, and volunteers and donors may not be engaged forever with a single service provider. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Employment for persons with disabilities, especially in bad economic times, gets very difficult. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Rising housing prices make affordable housing increasingly difficult to find and maintain. 16 Strategic Direction The strategic direction is a succinct statement about the strategy or approach an organization will take toward its work over a specific period of time. The statement is based on a combination of both the current environment (the opportunities and threats facing the organization) and the mission and competencies of the organization. It is often a direct response to the strategic questions asked by an organization. Based on the Board of Directors understanding of The Agencys mission, primary customer, core values, and the opportunities and threats in the current environment, the next three to five years will be a time of assessing and deepening its approaches to its work. Concurrently, The Agency will take more of a leadership role in working with a broader array of community resources, and it will explore the feasibility of actively engaging volunteers. The Agency will review and deepen its existing direct supports and services over time to ensure that they are they are state-of-the art for working effectively with children and adults with disabilities. They will further assess consumer and community needs to identify gaps or opportunities for shifts in service delivery. 17 Goals Areas Goals and objectives set out the broad results that the organization hopes to achieve within a specific time period (goals) and statements of shorter term results and collections of activities (objectives) which if achieved will constitute and achievement of the goals. Teachers' Education Not only do the rapid growth of technology changed the way we live, from the way business is conducted to the way we communicate with each other, technology advancements are also affecting the way we teach and learn. According to the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), new skills needed in the workplace are catalysts that spur technology use in the classroom. It is clear that the business world demand schools to prepare educated workers who are skilled at working in teams, can effectively solve problems, are able to process and apply information, and who can use technology effectively in the global market place in order to maximize productivity. Thus, the challenges and educational goals for schools should focus on creating appropriate learning environments that integrate technology as well as foster the needed skills to empower students. This paper describes the characteristics of teacher-centered classrooms and student-centered learning environment. In addition, this paper will explain the significance of teacher education for the effective implementation of technology as well as student-centered learning environment in K-12 classrooms. In the traditional teacher-centered classroom, teachers are expected to be the subject matter experts. They present the information in textbooks and when students asked questions, it is the job of the teacher to guide the students to think in such a way that they arrive at ‘correct’ answers (Carter, 1997). Students are also expected to learn factual-based knowledge and assessment is often based on the information they delivered from their rote skills.
